Isn’t the tC the Celica?

The market shifted. No more money in a little coupe, let alone a sports car.

Yes, sales.

It outlived most of its competitors. The Silvia and Prelude ended production before it did, the Integra ended the same year, and the Eclipse only lasted another couple of years.

Because the Scion TC (Toyota Zelas elsewhere) was meant to be the successor the Celica but it got too big to be as toss-friendly as the car it replaced. It couldn’t steal sales away from the Civic Coupe, the Altima Coupe (dead), and Kia Forte Koup (still going; didn’t know as I haven’t seen a current-gen in the wild).

The Celica was effectively replaced by the tC, at least the non-performance versions (though, you could get a TRD supercharger on the first gen tC). If you look at it that way, the Celica made it until 2016.

Those things still have fully independent suspension, and I hear they aren’t so bad in the twisties.

Because it actually had a pulse. It was around the time the Celica was discontinued that Toyota doubled down on boring sedans and lukewarm crossovers and shifted all the fun stuff over to Scion and Lexus.

I just make myself believe the Scion FRS is the successor to the AE86, 2000GT, and the old Celicas at the same time.

The bubble economy Toyota (and other Japanese companies) went through killed the Celica, and enthusiast-oriented or turbocharged engines like the 2ZZ or 3SGTE. Toyota also found out rally cars didn’t get enough customer exposure as Camrys in Nascar do.

The tC was on most Toyota lots at that point and they were larger (especially in the back seat) and much cheaper while being more powerful than the GT Celica thanks to having a 2.4L.

Toyota phased them out starting in 2004, by 2005 they essentially were just finishing their contracted parts runs.

I would have bought a tc over a Celica too, it’s bigger and I’m 6'3" and am uncomfortable in the Celica of that generation and daily an 05 Corolla which was cheaper used than a tc

I would say it all started with the 4th generation making most of them fwd and some 4wd. after that, they stopped being fun cars for the driver. The sixth gen I think was the last nail in the coffin and the 7th put them in the ground. Neither of these cars were particularly pretty and for the most part was the car you bought for your daughter to drive to the mall in because it was fun looking and cute! OMG! I think that they ruined the name of the car by putting it on crap and Toyota figured that out very slowly.

Personally there are only 2 Celicas I would consider

1. 1973 Toyota Celica GT

Kinja'd!!!

2. ST165 Toyota Celica GT-Four WRC
